Fun Time with PowerMyLearning

This is a sponsored post written and edited by AmiableAmy on behalf of PowerMyLearning. All opinions and photos (except the logo) are 100% mine.

As a former teacher, I believe children acquire knowledge and learn the most when they are having fun. For that reason, I am very happy and excited to share to all you mommies and daddies out there about the great and modern way of fun learning that would help any parent or teacher in their strategy to re-enforce children's learning potential.

I was introduced to a Website which has an innovative approach; and a computer based learning program called PowerMyLearning. I am delighted to tell you that this learning program is from K2 to 12 and so far, the highest learning technique that I have seen online.

The line of subjects they offered are similar to what is taught in schools like Math, Science, Literacy, Social Studies, Technology and Language as well as Arts and Music. Mostly, they are in a form of game activities that a child would not even think that he or she is learning some lessons. It sharpens their cognitive learning and reasoning as well.
Believe me, I have tried it with Chloe and she loves it! Like most of the children in this generation, Chloe knows how to operate a computer but of course, with an adult supervision. I told her to logged in and once she is in PowerMyLearning site, she was excited to check the featured games.  We focused on K2 and she has all the freedom to choose whatever activity she fancies.

Favorite PowerMyLearning Educational Games of Chloe
Geology: Dinosaur Fossils
This is a read along guide for kids. Since Chloe has a curious mind about Dinosaurs, as she browsed and read the facts about them, she has full of excitement. Every time she reads new things, she gained knowledge then; she would turn her head to mommy and giggled. She is having fun! It was very impressive to see her wanting to learn more.
Science: Solid and Liquid Activity
She loves this game and she was experimenting thru the pictures. It was fascinating for her to learn what will happen to a solid when it is heated and a liquid when frozen. As she learns the experiments, she would react in surprising manner. I can see that she was delighted to learn.
Reading
The follow along read aloud version of "A Snowy Day Story" is a big hit for Chloe. She loves to read.  To sum it up, in the eyes of Chloe, PowerMyLearning has been her favorite Website for the last 5 days now and I know, this will remain her favorite.  Based on my observation, she has learned a lot from PowerMyLearning. By the way, you can create a free account in PowerMyLearning Website so; you might as well check it out!

First Day of Kingdom Rock

The Kingdom Rock is a very interesting strategy to teach the Christian children about God. There is a Daily Bible Point which is carefully integrated into each day's activities for an unforgettable faith formation. Day 1, the children were able to know by heart that "God's love helps us ... stand strong!". The photo below is Day 1 scenario where the Lady (head of the whole kingdom (*v*) was leading the kingdom for a prayer, introducing Truman, the Bible Body and so much more. Some crews were still busy finalizing the total numbers of children and volunteers. Safety for everyone was given the top priority.

The photo below was when the children started to learn the song, they sing and dance, and had a great time participating.

During Snack time, the children went to the King's Kitchen and before eating, they wiped their hands with using the wet wipes. The Lady in the King's Kitchen show them how to make a heart shape before eating their sandwiches. Teaching how God loves us. It was pretty interesting.

After the King's Kitchen, they went to the Chadders Theater and the children receives the Truman Bible Memory Buddy. They wear the Bible Buddy as a necklace. The Pre-school children were pretty behave listening attentively to the story of Chadder, the Chipmunk.

Children heads back to the Pre-School Kingdom and do the crafts. First day, we let them color and design their crown. Finally, the games for the day were Sheep Herding, Follow the Shepherd and Where's the Heart. That was fun!

Fanfare Finale for Day 1 was interesting. We all went back to the dome and see the video who is caught in action and starring for the day. A volunteer photographer was taking photos i every kingdom. The Lady at the dome was showing the children an experiment of balloons. Children saw which balloon stands strong!

First Day of Kingdom Rock #VBS at Divine Mercy Catholic Academy

This was the scenario of the first day of Kingdom Rock #VBS at the Divine Mercy Catholic Academy in Merritt Island. There were a lot of student volunteers and good number of adults. On the first day, I was on the registration table taking the names of the participants for checking in. We started on time and when everyone went to their respective groups, I went back to my pre-school kingdom where we have 18 cute and adorable little ones.

First hour of the day was a bit unorganized but, pretty much adjusted the flow in an hour. Everything was set up accordingly, KUDOS to the organizer especially the Director of the Religious Education Ms Mary Frances Coburn. That's her wearing green t-shirt at the middle of the photos.

On the first day, the children were being introduced of the Bible Buddy, Truman which is a bulldog. The children were taught that "God's love helps us ... stand strong."

I was in-charge of the crafts and there were 4 crafts to choose from. We made the crown, have the kids color and wear them. Questions like, "How does God loves us? and "How does God show his love to you? " were being asked to the little ones and they answered great. They were very attentive!

The lead volunteer is Ms Ginny who was in-charge of the story telling while the in-charge of the games was Ms Terri. Both were very enthusiastic and they sure can handle the group after all, they have little ones of their own. They were very motherly, very patient and they tried their best to inculcate what's to be learned for the day.

On the next day ... kids came back. It means one thing, the children loves to learn the word of God in "Kingdom Rock". Up next... photos on the second day. Thanks for stopping by.

The #VBS Week

I devoted my time last week for #VBS and I had no regret waking up so early and preparing the crafts for the kids. It was a change of routine for me at least; I have things to do on schedule. There were about 18 pre-school children who sign up and belong in our group. There were 3 adults in our group and 6 volunteer students. They probably are in the elementary and junior high. Yep my bad, I never get the chance to ask them personally. Each one of them had to look after three kids in the group. We were in-charge of the crafts, storytelling and games.

In the Philippines while I was teaching the first graders, I have more than 50 students in the class and no one is assisting me. Although, I have some parents who volunteered to clean the classroom and maintain the immediate surrounding but whole day, the kids are under my supervisory. I never find it hard.

Here, it is different and I guess, teachers here are more relaxed and can focus on their lessons more. They have assistant teacher per room of 15 children. I like it! Anyway, the photo above is when they have games. I will go over this week about what we did during the #VBS. Thanks for always visiting my blog. See you again.

On #VBS

I was a bit tired this week but, I truly had fun with the kids in our #VBS. We have about 18 kids in our group but we also have 6 students in elementary who volunteered as crew leaders. Each one of them were assigned to 3 kids. There are 3 adults in our group and I was assigned to crafts, Miss Terri for games and Miss Ginny for bible story.

The kids had fun with the aqua booster craft. Everyday, they love the games and they are so enthusiastic sharing what they learn for the day. The pre-schoolers are pretty attentive with the bible stories because their answers are on the right track. Now, I have change of hearts, I think I am going back to teaching.

Classroom is All Set for #VBS

Last Thursday, our group for #VBS (Vacation Bible School) made our final meet up to set up the classroom. We were assigned to some activities and I got the crafts which will be done in the classroom. One adult is in-charge for the games which will be done outdoor; one for the songs which will be done in every activity and one adult is in-charge for story telling. I am really excited. We were expecting 12 children in our group but, we are all set for 20.

We set up the room and put some posters to make the room ideal for this activity. We also set up the castle where kids can play in between the activities.

Now, after 5 years, this will be my second time handling children in a classroom. I am truly excited. The first time was when I was a substitute teacher in a daycare and was assigned in one year old and twos. This time it will be different because I am a volunteer for this one week event. Our group will be handling 4 year olds and most of them are boys. I heard there are active boys who signed up, LOL. I am confident though that all of us will be having fun.

Hire a Tutor Online

When you decide to go back to school, you have two objectives: get the desired grades and graduate at the top of the class. Well, it is not always easy. Consider yourself lucky if you have a great teacher. The teacher is great when he/she can expound the subject according to the situation and not merely rely on books. There are teachers who are there to bring out the best in you but sad to say; there are also teachers who just didn't care whether you understand the lesson or not.

That's when tutoring online come into the rescue. If you are having a hard time understanding your lesson and you have no one to ask for guidance; you can always find great help from others. Hire a tutor online. It is always a bit expensive but, they are there to help and because it is a one-on-one approach, you will learn at your own speed.

Tutors are very dedicated on their chosen career. They see to it that the learner will truly get what was being paid for and that's to learn and master what was not understood. Of course, you need to hire the expert and knowledgeable on the subject. So; if you think you are in trouble with one or two of your subjects, hire a tutor now. For sure, you will maintain the good grades and there is a big possibility that you will achieve the goals that you desired the most.

Philippines Women's Sabre Fencing Team for SEA Games

Guest Post: Antonio Levy S. Ingles, Jr.,Ph.D.

Dear Friends,

God bless you more!

Please assist a Teacher-Athlete and her teammates in the SEA Games...

Lenita Reyes Otadoy, Joanna Franquelli and Jyllyn Nicanor (Philippines Women's Sabre Fencing Team) have been chosen to compete in the upcoming SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia by the Philippine Fencing Association on November 13-18, 2011.

To compete, they have to find sponsors, donors and patrons for their airfares, board and lodging and allowances (pocket money).

Although their training in China is all expense-paid through the Philippine Fencing Association this October, unfortunately there is no more enough budget to shoulder their expenses on the actual days of competition.

Each of them only needs Php 50,000 to pay for the above for their 10 day-stay in Jakarta. They are very much willing to put the company logo of the sponsors, donors and patrons in their uniforms.

Please support them by finding a company/individual to sponsor them. Please Support The Philippines Women's Sabre Fencing Team! Please Support Lenita Reyes Otadoy, Joanna Franquelli and Jyllyn Nicanor!

Professor Reyes-Otadoy PE Faculty of University of the Philippines (and my colleague here at De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde) was recognized as an Outstanding Athlete for bringing honor and glory to the country which she represented in various local and international tournaments and by winning several awards.

Professor Reyes-Otadoy won the Silver Medal in the Annual Dayrit Cup Fencing Championships on June 19, 2009 and the Gold Medal in the same tournament in 2008. She also organized the UP Sabre Fencing Varsity Team which finally won the gold in UAAP.

Online Degree at Walden University

I was browsing on the Website of WaldenU.edu because I was searching for an online Master's Degree Program. I have been planning to take an online degree so that I can continue my master's at the comfort of my home. I graduated the Bachelor of Science in Education with Social Science as my major.

I tried to check the M.S. in Early Childhood Studies of this Website and found out that it is a non-licensure degree program. I thought that it is alright if I gain the knowledge and skills to help me with the understanding of the diversity of Early Childhood studies. If I decided to take the Teaching and Diversity in early Childhood Education, it will take me two years at the maximum. I have to think about it whether to pursue this dream or find an alternative ways.

Anyway, visit the Walden University's online degree programs and maybe, you will find the degree that you might be interested. They have a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctoral programs which are available for study online. Visit the Website today and learn about Walden University's degree programs, tuition and financial aid, and how to apply at Walden. Check out the Website now!

Library and Reading

When I was in high school, I love to visit the library and read magazines. I can stay so many hours hopping from one magazine to another. Serial Section was my favorite place to hang out especially when I do not have classes. Of course, I love reading the things that discussed relationship such as Sweet things to say to your girlfriend or boyfriend. Basically, if I was not in my classroom, you will find me in the library. I also love books especially about places, people and culture. For me, places that I have never been only exist in dreams. I am also fascinated in history books and recipe either native or foreign. When I am in the library, reading is my only passion. I travel the world through my imagination with the help of the photography book that I always love to view. That was my high school life! When I went to college, I got me a job as a student assistant in a huge library of the university that I was enrolled. That was one of the happiest moments of my college days. I still go to the Serial Section but my favorite place turned out to be the Reference Section. Looking back to all those years, here I am, in a foreign land fulfilling my dreams. It all started with my reading habit and love of library.

Palalan Elem. School Projects Update

These two pictures was sent to me yesterday by Mr. Joel, the principal of Palalan Elementary School, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. These are the proofs that the money I sent the first time was put into place. That is why, my second donation will be scheduled on the 20th of this month and that will be for the flip flops of the children in this school. There are 157 children in the school but Mr. Joel will take pictures of those children that doesn't have flip flops. I can't afford with shoes yet, so flip flops are fine.I would personally like to thank MS. ROSE B. of Cebu City for the donors. I was totally blown away for the amount that you sent especially that it comes from the Philippines. Thank you so much. I was confused now though. Is the amount for the Palalan or Agusan? I posted two Paypal Logos (edited it today) at the top right corner to avoid confusion. I will just give your donation to Palalan Elem. School on June 20th. If there are available space for mural, it goes to that okay? OR, 50 pcs of flip flops for 50 kids, sounds great ha? Oh! I am so happy. May God bless you more.
The photo above is the unfinished mural that I sponsored. The painter is a student that is why its off and on. I am already excited on the next project. Rest assured that I will post the pictures of the outcomes.

I encourage you all to support the public schools in your community back home. These are my suggestions: Backpacks, pad of papers, pencils, erasers, sharpener, crayons, umbrella and raincoat. Those would delight them.

Making A Difference

Early dawn, around 2 AM, I chatted with my friend who is already a Principal in Palalan Elementary School, Soutwest District of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. He showed me the pictures of his school's project this month, it is a Mural Painting. This is the second school that I, in my little means shared my blessings. The other school is Agusan Elementary School, both in the same city. Well, this school is different because this is located in the hinterland. The parents to most of the 157 pupils in this baranggay are farmers in a parcel of land good for their family's survival. They painted the wall fence surrounding the school area to make it pleasant to see. That is only a minor part of making the school as a place of cleanliness and most of all for learning. This project would last at least three years until the paint will fade. So, the money I sent to support this kind of project was worth it. I do not publicized my name on the wall though. To see the pictures and the realization of the project was enough for me.
The message on the Mural was written in Filipino to show patriotism in the country. I know how hard it is for the Department of Education to supply all the demands of each school for the entire nation that is why, in my own way, I support the Principal in their cause of making a little improvements of their school premises.
Joel, the name of the principal told me how it ached him seeing children come to school without shoes....not even flipflops. So, I made a promise to do something about that at the end of this month. After the mural, children this time. I know what he said were all true because we were once assigned in the farthest school in my city where we have to walk on foot the 8 kms just to arrived the school zone. This school is better than what we have been to. Anyway, the pictures below are just few kids in first grade. As a principal, he can not impose the parents to buy uniforms because they have limited income and that is the scenario of the students in public schools. Children eager to learn without the comfort of material things. How precious is that? That is why I am so blessed that I saw the real issues of our society because I learned to be compassionate with others. It humbles me to be reminded of such event of my life and at the same time, I am aching inside. That is their classrooms at the back, at least those are concrete already and not a NIPA HUT ( made up of a coconut leaves, bamboo and wood). Yes, they come to school in this attire and would you believed it if I say, this is their best clothes already? Look at their feet, did you see a kid wearing shoes? Not one! They all wear slippers or flipflops. These are the kids TV time. It is called "SineEskwela", Department of Education project which enable the children learn something what they see on TV. The lesson was created with objectives , subject matter, motivation and it is also inter-active. It is not just TV Watching. Check the video in {here} as Lea Salonga explained it. They were outside and under the tree, having a class because during this time, there is no vacant classroom. Sad right?

(About the attire of the teacher at the left side, I have to say, this is not her usual attire when she comes to school. Teachers are compulsory to wear uniforms everyday and fully groomed. )Check this topic that I wrote in NOSTALGIC. Thank you for reading friends.

Nostalgic

photo courtesy of Rocky Monteclaro of Panoramio site

June is back to school in the Philippines. This year, the normal class started June 1 for all public schools. I was a little bit Nostalgic and at the same time relieved from all the Rush of working as a teacher. For 12 years, I have a daily routine. I live in an uptown community at the southwest of my city and my workplace is located at the East. I have to travel 40 kms everyday. The commute was so tiring and the traffic was really killing me. There were times that the shuttle driver would pick me up at five in the morning and I have to leave without breakfast. I call the driver "Manong Ben" if not for his dedication as a driver, I will be in deep trouble with my superiors. Everyday, I have to endure six rides, wakes up at 4 AM, no normal breakfast (my fault), in school up to five in the afternoon, arrived home at seven in the evening (exhausted) but I still have to write my lesson plan for the next day. Whewww! Lovelife? Set aside. UGH! LOL! Looking back, I can only smile. Was I happy? Yes! Was I tired? Of course yes!
As a teacher, the profession was rewarding. The reward is not money matters. The reward was when my 50 students can read and comprehend and when I gain the respect of the parents in the community.

June to August are crucial months for first grade teachers in public schools. The new pupils usually do not have preparatory school. Only few attended nursery and kinder. Therefore, 70% of the class have no idea of school setting, doesn't know how to read, doesn't know how to write and first time to be away from home.

Teachers usually help the children understand the rules inside the classroom. Some children would come to school crying and afraid of the new environment. And when their parents pick them up so late, they will cry too. It is up to the teacher's creative strategy how to calm a child like this. Take note, we have 50 children inside the classroom with one teacher. I know, not an ideal ratio. That is the real scenario of Public Schools in the Philippines and that is the truth.

Teaching in public schools taught me to be humble and appreciate how blessed I am as a person. I saw poverty in the eyes of my pupils. There were at least 20% who come to school with out papers and pencils and with out snacks. I share my blessings to them. By giving them a pad of paper and a pencil would mean heaven for them who have nothing.

I missed my classroom and missed my old students. I still keep in touch with my co-teachers and help the school as much as I can. But, how I wish I could help more.

Together You And I - Lea Salonga

Lea Salonga is my favorite performer. I bought 3 of her albums and I love her songs. I can actually sing-along most of it. In relation to my Nostalgia, I would like to share with you guys, the theme song for "Brigada Eskwela" by the Department of Education in the Philippines.

Grossology Exhibit

Grossology
Orlando Science Center
has been in the industry since January of 1955 when the Central Florida Federation of Art and Sciences, a group of visionary Central Florida citizens chartered a small non-profit science museum which to be called the Central Florida Museum and Planetarium. It has come a long way since then. At present, it attracts nearly 400,000 visitors each year and it remains one of the most attended cultural institutions in Central Florida. Personalizing the guest experience by demonstrating how science impacts everyday life is its main goal.

On January 31, 2009 is the premiere of Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, a colorful and hands-on exhibit that uses humor to teach kids about health and biology sponsored by Arnold Palmer Hospital. This Grossology Exhibit - Orlando Science Center is in collaboration among Science World, Advanced Exhibits and Grossology author Silvia Branzei. Based from a book series by author Silvia Branzei, which has sold over 350,000 copies worldwide. She is a teacher, writer, curriculum designer, microbiologist and is a strong believer of teaching science through gross things and this theme runs throughout the exhibit. This is the second Grossology exhibit for the Orlando Science Center. The first successful run of Animal Grossology was held in 2006.

I recommend this to everyone specially kids and everybody who is young at heart. Grossology offers humorous "hands-on" opportunities to learn about the human body such as the nose which explores how your nose acts as an air filter, a smell sensor and a mucus producer. Then, there’s “Gas Attack,” a pinball game that will show you how food causes gas. You can mimic the buildup of acid indigestion with the “Burp Machine,” of which concludes each demonstration with a gigantic burp. They say that the possibilities for disgusting discoveries are close to endless. Fun, exciting , very educational plus you can have the chance to test your Grossology knowledge with multiple trivia activities, exploratory labs, puzzles and games.

You will really have fun. Bring your family and I will be seeing you there.
